Extra Places Each Way – US Masters

The Masters shares top spot with The Open Championship as the biggest golf betting event each year. Traditionally the first Major Championship of every golfing season, The Masters always sees keen competition between the bookmakers, all of whom are looking to win your business.

A key strategy of the biggest brands in the sportsbook industry is to offer golf punters increased value at the Majors, so don’t be fooled into thinking you need to stick with the industry-standard 5 places each way, 1/4 odds terms. Instead, as the event approaches, you’re likely to be able to back perennial Augusta favourites Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Brooks Koepka or defending champion Jon Rahm – with an additional each way place or five in your back pocket. Below we walk you through a guide to grabbing 8, 10 or even 12 places each way at The 2024 US Masters as the event approaches.

The Masters 10 Places

12 Places Each Way at the US Masters - 2024 Pre-Event Bets Only

The US Masters at Augusta features an exclusive limited field of players. The Top 50 in the World Golf Rankings are joined by the Top 12 finishers from the previous year’s tournament plus a selected list of Major Champions, the best players from the previous PGA Tour season, plus winners of the biggest tournaments on the PGA Tour. In all, a field of around 90 players will play in each edition of The Masters, which is 66 players shy of the US Open, Open Championship and PGA Championship.

A smaller field inevitably increases the chances of a place finish, so traditionally the leading bookmakers used to stick to their guns and go 5 places each way 1/4 odds. However Paddy Power were the first to extend out the each way terms by 20% and give punters a value 6 places each way at 1/5 odds. 2024 is likely to see a number of bookmakers stretch to 8, 10 or maybe even 12 places each way as we get closer to Masters week at the beginning of April. Coral went for a record 10 places each way 1/5 odds at the 2023 Masters, with the likes of bet365, Boylesports and Betfred all offering 8 places each-way at 1/5 odds, so watch this space!

The Masters Each Way Places Tracker

For a number of years we’ve have been tracking the value dished out by online bookmakers across the Major golf tournaments. Extended each way terms gives punters a huge boost in terms of profit potential and is the perfect promotion for those who love to back big priced long-shots. With the High Street bookies still tending to offer their customers inferior each-way terms, savvy punters have been using online players who have been offering far better value to their customers now for years.

Why Take Extra Places Each Way?

Maximising the number of places paid by bookmakers for each way bets is absolutely essential when backing your selection(s) at The Masters. After all, anything can happen in golf and the additional places each way provide an increased chance of getting a return or, as is often the case, a bigger profit if there’s any reduction for ties.

2018: Coral punters who had backed Marc Leishman (9th place) , World Number 1 Dustin Johnson and Tony Finau (both tied for 10th) all received each-way payouts, as they offered a magnificent 10 places each-way at 1/5 odds. But a 4-way tie for 5th place caused some serious mayhem for punters at the 2018 Masters. Rory McIlroy, Henrik Stenson, Bubba Watson and Cameron Smith all finished at -9 under par and punters who had placed their bets with bet365, Betfair Sportsbook or Paddy Power all received full each-way payouts at 1/5 odds. However those who used Betfred, Boylesports or William Hill – all of whom went 7 places each-way 1/5 odds – all received reduced 75% payouts for the place. Those who used Ladbrokes only received a 25% payout on the basis that they offered the standard 5 places each-way at 1/4 odds..

2017: Paul Casey finished in solo 6th position in 2017 despite a second round 75 and the Englishman’s backers were counting their each-way profit if they had backed him with any of the firms offering 6 or more places each-way. Kevin Chappell and Rory McIlroy backers who opted for the 8 places option offered by a few firms had the most to shout about though with the pair finishing in a tie for 7th place.

2016: This year more than any other showed the reason to back with bookmakers who gave additional places namely BetVictor, Coral, Paddy Power, Stan James and Sky Bet. 3 players finished tied for 4th place, meaning that punters who backed the very popular Paul Casey, J.B. Holmes and Dustin Johnson with any of the aforementioned received FULL each way place payouts. Those who didn’t received a 33% reduction. Sky Bet and Paddy Power punters who backed Matt Fitzpatrick (300/1) or Dane Soren Kjeldsen (500/1) also scored with a reduced-for-ties payout at huge prices.

2015: With Paul Casey, Dustin Johnson and Ian Poulter all sharing 6th place, punters who placed their pre-event bet with Paddy Power managed to get a reduced each-way return on each of the trio courtesy of their 6th place offer. Betfair punters and new Betway customers got a healthy 2/3 payout on these players thanks to their 7 places each way pledge.

2014: Paddy Power and Stan James customers received full each way 1/4 odds place returns on Rickie Fowler 66/1 and Matt Kuchar 22/1. As both tied for 5th place, those who’d backed either of the stellar Americans with other firms who were offering the standard 5 places each way received a 50% reduction in their returns for ties.

2013: 888sport and Paddy Power customers received a part (50%) each way return on Brandt Snedeker and Thorbjorn Olesen. Snedeker had been a hugely popular player in the betting market at 35/1 and the young Dane Thorbjorn had also been backed into 150/1. A £10 each way stake on Olesen with either of these bookmakers would have returned £192.50. Those who backed him elsewhere had no joy.

2012: Paddy Power and Stan James customers again benefited hugely from receiving 6 places each way in a tournament that was extremely close. Phil Mickelson, 12/1, Lee Westwood 20/1, Matt Kuchar 60/1 and Peter Hanson 150/1, all tied for 3rd spot. 6 places each way punters received full 1/4 odds place payouts on all 4 players, whilst all other bookmakers reduced their payouts by 25% because of the ties rule. £10 each way on Hanson returned a massive £375.
